Watch: DuoCap explained

Delivery Technology

How DuoCap protects and delivers probiotics

Bacteria are fragile and stomach acid is harsh. DuoCap is a capsule-in-capsule delivery system engineered to protect the dose and deliver it to your intestine.

Why most probiotics fail before they work

The human stomach maintains a pH between 1.5 and 3.5, an environment harsh enough to break down food and damage live bacteria. When a single-capsule probiotic dissolves in this acidic environment, its contents are exposed directly to gastric acid, and some of the bacteria can be lost before reaching the intestine, where they are needed.

A meaningful portion of the dose may be rendered inactive during gastric transit before it can reach the intestine, adhere to the intestinal lining, or act where it is intended.

Bacteria are fragile live microorganisms that need to survive gastric transit and reach their target site in the gastrointestinal tract. This is the problem DuoCap was designed to solve.

How DuoCap 2-stage delivery works

Stage 1: Capsule in the stomachStage 2: Capsule released in the intestine
Stage 1

The outer capsule dissolves in the stomach

The outer capsule dissolves in the stomach's acidic environment, releasing the prebiotic component while shielding the inner capsule and its probiotic payload from gastric acid destruction.

Stage 2

The inner capsule releases in the intestine

The inner capsule reaches the small intestine where the pH level changes, engineered to release the probiotic payload where it is intended to act.

THE DUO-CAP CAPSULE

Our protective delayed release capsule technology ensures protected dose delivery of our bacteria to your intestine – for maximum benefit.

Liquid prebiotic fibre engulfs the capsule, providing environmental protection of the bacteria

Gold standard strains are housed in the smaller, inner stomach-acid resistant capsule

Each capsule is designed to dissolve at different pH levels (and places) within your gut. The inner capsule is designed to release the probiotic into the ileum in your intestine.

The capsule is flushed with nitrogen to ensure no oxygen contamination

An air-tight clinical seal creates a protected, closed ecosystem

Both capsules are made from plant fibre, making them vegetarian, halal and kosher friendly.

A defined strain

Probitec DuoCap 30 delivers a single defined strain, identified by its full genus, species and strain code.

Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14

The single defined strain delivered by Probitec DuoCap 30, with a fully sequenced genome and identified by its full genus, species and strain code, with documented source and validated identification methods.

How the capsule is made

DuoCap uses a liquid-encapsulation process built around sealing the inner capsule and keeping oxygen away from the culture.

Licaps liquid encapsulation

Liquid capsule fill is designed to support stability of the capsule contents.

LEMS sealing

Liquid Encapsulation by Micro-Spray provides an extended seal zone designed for an air-tight closure that protects the capsule contents from external elements.

Nitrogen bubble protection

Inert nitrogen atmosphere inside each capsule prevents oxidation and preserves the viability of live cultures.

Defined dose per capsule

Each capsule is made to a defined specification, so the CFU count on the pack is what goes into every dose.
