Fibremaxxing: the short answer

Fibremaxxing can be healthy if it means moving towards a sensible daily fibre target. It becomes less helpful when “maxxing” means eating as much fibre as possible, increasing it overnight or relying on several powders.

The goal is not the highest number. It is enough fibre, from a useful mix of sources, in an amount your gut can tolerate.

Fibremaxxing is a social-media term, not a medical treatment or formal eating plan. There is also no single agreed definition. Some people use it to mean meeting their recommended intake. Others use it to mean eating as much fibre as possible.[2]

That difference matters.

Meeting your fibre needs is sensible. Chasing the highest possible number is not necessary.

Why has fibremaxxing become so popular?

Fibre has become one of the biggest nutrition trends of 2026.

Google reported that U.S. searches for dietary fibre reached an all-time high in 2026. Searches for “fibermaxxing” increased by 115% over a 90-day period.[1]

This is U.S. trend data. It should not be treated as South African search-volume data.

However, the trend reflects a real nutrition problem: many adults eat less fibre than recommended. Many adults consume only around 15-20 g of fibre a day, compared with recommended intakes of approximately 25-38 g.[7]

Fibremaxxing has therefore taken an under-consumed nutrient and made it more interesting to a wider audience.

That is mostly a good thing.

Is fibremaxxing healthy?

It can be.

Fibremaxxing is helpful when it encourages you to:

  • Check how much fibre you currently eat
  • Add more beans, lentils, whole grains, fruit and vegetables
  • Include fibre at several meals
  • Support easier bowel movements
  • Feed the microbes living in your colon
  • Close a regular fibre gap
  • Make changes you can maintain

The World Health Organization recommends that adults consume at least 25 g of naturally occurring dietary fibre from food each day.[4]

The National Academies provides more detailed targets based on age and sex.[3]

The problem is not the idea of eating more fibre.

The problem is the word “maxxing”. It may encourage people to believe that more is always better.

It is not.

What does fibremaxxing get right?

1. Most people should pay more attention to fibre

Many people carefully track protein, sugar or calories but have no idea how much fibre they eat.

Fibremaxxing draws attention to a nutrient that is often overlooked.

That matters because fibre supports:

  • Stool bulk
  • Stool consistency
  • Movement through the colon
  • Ease of passing a stool
  • Bowel comfort
  • Microbial fermentation
  • Short-chain fatty-acid production

2. It focuses on adding useful foods

Many diet trends are based on removing foods.

Fibremaxxing can be different. A sensible version encourages you to add foods such as:

  • Split peas
  • Lentils

  • Whole grains
  • Fruit

  • Nuts and seeds

3. It may help close the fibre gap

The fibre gap is the difference between how much fibre you eat and how much is recommended.

Knowing the size of your gap is more useful than simply telling yourself to “eat more fibre”.

4. It recognises that gut microbes need feeding

Certain fibres resist digestion higher in the digestive system and reach the colon.

There, gut microbes can use the fibre through a process called fermentation.

During fermentation, microbes may produce short-chain fatty acids such as:

  • Acetate
  • Propionate
  • Butyrate

What does fibremaxxing get wrong?

1. Your fibre target is not a minimum to beat

A recommended intake is a useful target. It is not a competition.

Eating 60 g does not automatically provide twice the benefit of eating 30 g.

The goal should be to meet an appropriate intake comfortably and consistently.

2. More fibre is not always better

A sudden large increase may cause:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pressure
  • Cramping
  • Loose stools
  • Changes in bowel habits

Some fibres are fermented very quickly. This can produce more gas over a short period.

Other fibres may mainly add bulk.

The type of fibre matters as much as the number of grams.

3. Not all fibre works in the same way

Two products may both provide 5 g of fibre but behave very differently in the gut.

One may mainly increase stool bulk.

Another may be rapidly fermented.

Another may reach the colon and be fermented more gradually.

Fibremaxxing should therefore not be reduced to one number on a tracking app.

Bloating may mean fermentation is taking place. But more bloating does not prove:

What does 25-38 g of fibre look like?

A simple way to understand the target is to divide it into portions containing about 5 g of fibre.

  • A woman aged 19-50 needs about five 5 g portions.
  • A man aged 19-50 needs about seven to eight 5 g portions.

Foods providing around 5 g or more may include:

  • A medium apple with its skin
  • Half a cup of kidney beans
  • Half a cup of chickpeas
  • Half a cup of lentils
  • A cup of cooked broccoli
  • A cup of cooked sweet potato
  • A cup of cooked peas

The exact values vary by portion, variety and cooking method.

Reaching your target usually requires several fibre-rich choices across the day. One apple or one salad is helpful, but it may not be enough.

What is the safest way to start fibremaxxing?

Step 1: Check what you currently eat

Do not jump straight to 30 or 40 g because a video told you to.

Record what you eat over two or three typical days.

Use food labels and a trusted fibre chart to estimate your daily intake.

For example:

  • Current intake: 16 g
  • Target: 25 g
  • Likely gap: 9 g

You now have a useful starting point.

Step 2: Add fibre gradually

Add one change at a time.

For example, you might:

  • Add fruit at breakfast
  • Include lentils or beans at lunch
  • Choose a higher-fibre cereal
  • Add vegetables at dinner
  • Replace a refined grain with a whole-grain option

The NIDDK advises adding fibre a little at a time so that the body can adjust.[5]

Step 3: Spread fibre across the day

Do not try to eat your full target in one meal.

Include some fibre at:

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner
  • One or two snacks

This is usually more comfortable and practical.

Step 4: Drink enough liquid

Fibre and fluid work together.

The amount of fluid you need depends on your health, body size, activity and climate. People who have been told to restrict fluid should follow their healthcare professional’s advice.

Step 5: Use different fibre sources

Do not rely on one cereal or on one seed.

A mix of foods may provide different fibres and support a more varied eating pattern.

Useful signs may include:

  • Softer stools
  • Easier bowel movements
  • Less straining
  • Better stool volume
  • A more complete feeling after a bowel movement
  • Improved regularity

Bowel frequency is not the only measure.

Can fibremaxxing cause bloating?

Yes, especially when fibre is increased too quickly.

Certain fibres reach the colon and are fermented by gut microbes.

Fermentation is useful. It can support microbial activity and short-chain fatty-acid production.

However, rapid or excessive fermentation may also produce:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal discomfort

This does not mean you should avoid all fermentable fibre.

It can support the microbiome when it increases the amount of suitable fermentable fibre reaching the colon.

The gut microbiome is the community of microbes living in your digestive tract.

How do you choose a fibre supplement for fibremaxxing?

Ask these six questions:

  1. Does it support bowel function?
  2. Does it resist digestion and reach the colon?
  3. Can gut microbes use it?
  4. Does its fermentation support short-chain fatty-acid production?
  5. Has digestive tolerability been studied?
  6. Does the serving provide a practical, researched amount?

A large number on the front of a pack is not enough.

Research on the exact fibre ingredient matters.

Where does Fibersol®-2 fit?

Fibersol®-2 is one example of a clinically studied fibre.

It is a digestion-resistant maltodextrin made from corn starch. It resists digestion higher in the digestive system and reaches the colon, where it can undergo gradual fermentation.[12]
