Do Probiotics Need Refrigeration? Storage Tips for South African Heat
Some probiotics need refrigeration while others are shelf-stable, but every product should be stored according to its own label instructions.

The effect depends on the exact strains, formulation, packaging, temperature, length of exposure and stability testing. This is why the product’s own storage instructions should always come first.
Why does probiotic storage matter?
A probiotic is a live microorganism that may provide a health benefit when taken in an adequate amount. [1,3]
The word live is important.
Probiotic organisms must remain alive while the product is manufactured, transported and stored. Scientists call this viability.
Viability simply means whether the microorganisms are still alive.
The number of live organisms can fall before you ever swallow the product. Oxygen, moisture, raised temperatures and prolonged light exposure may all reduce bacterial survival.
Heat
Higher temperatures may damage bacterial cells and reduce viability. The effect depends on the strains, product design, exposure time and temperature.
This is especially relevant during transport and storage under conditions that differ from those stated on the label. [4-5]
Moisture
Many probiotic supplements contain dried, dormant microorganisms.
Moisture may activate these organisms too early. Once active, they may use their stored energy and become less likely to survive until the product is taken.
Humidity can therefore matter as much as temperature. [4-5]
Oxygen
Some probiotic organisms are better suited to low-oxygen environments.
Long exposure to oxygen may damage parts of their cells. Packaging and keeping the container properly closed may help limit this exposure. [4]
Light
Some strains may also be affected by prolonged light exposure.
This is one reason probiotics are often supplied in containers, foil packs or boxes designed to protect their contents.
Do all probiotics need refrigeration?
No. Some probiotics require refrigeration, while others are designed to remain stable at room temperature. [1]
The US National Institutes of Health advises consumers that storage requirements differ between products. It recommends checking the exact label for the expiry date and storage instructions.
There are three broad possibilities.
1. Products that require refrigeration
These products should be kept cold according to the label directions.
If the product is delivered, the manufacturer or retailer may use insulated packaging or another cold-chain system.
Do not assume that a refrigerated product can remain at room temperature for a set number of hours. That information must come from the manufacturer’s stability testing.
2. Products labelled as shelf-stable
A shelf-stable probiotic is designed to be stored under the room-temperature conditions stated on its label.
It may use:
- More stable strains
- Protective drying methods
- Moisture-control technology
- Protective packaging
- Capsules or sachets designed to limit environmental exposure
However, shelf-stable does not mean heat-proof.
It does not mean the product can remain in a hot car, direct sunlight or a humid room for long periods.
3. Products with unclear instructions
When the label does not give clear storage guidance, ask the manufacturer or pharmacist.
Do not guess based on the product format. A capsule is not automatically shelf-stable, and a powder does not automatically require refrigeration.
Is a refrigerated probiotic better?
No. Refrigeration alone does not show that a probiotic is better or worse.
A product may require refrigeration because of its strains or formulation. Another may remain stable without refrigeration because it was designed and tested for room-temperature storage.
Quality should be assessed by considering:
- The strains
- The viable count
- Stability through shelf life
- Packaging
- Storage directions
- Evidence supporting the finished formulation
The World Gastroenterology Organisation recommends that probiotic labels include the strain, viable count at the end of shelf life and recommended storage conditions. [2]
A refrigerated product is not automatically higher quality.
A shelf-stable product is not automatically more advanced.
Both should be supported by suitable stability information.
What does “shelf-stable” really mean?
For this article, shelf-stable means the product has been designed for storage without routine refrigeration under the conditions stated by its manufacturer.
Those conditions still matter.
Shelf-stable does not mean:
- Unlimited resistance to heat
- Safe storage in direct sunlight
- Safe storage in a parked car
- Protection after the container is left open
- Protection from bathroom humidity
- That every organism remains alive under every condition
Always read words such as:
- “Store in a cool, dry place”
- “Refrigerate after opening”
- “Keep below…”
- “Protect from moisture”
- “Protect from light”
Do not replace the label instructions with general internet advice.
How should you store probiotics in South African conditions?
South African homes, courier systems and travel plans can create several practical storage questions.
The following guidance is general. The exact label should always take priority.
Courier deliveries
Bring the parcel indoors as soon as practical.
Do not leave it on a sunny doorstep or in an outdoor delivery box for the rest of the day.
When it arrives:
- Check whether the packaging is sealed and dry.
- Read the storage instructions.
- Note whether the parcel feels mildly warm or unusually hot.
- Refrigerate it only when the label tells you to.
- Contact the manufacturer or pharmacist when you are unsure.
A warm parcel is not automatic proof that every probiotic organism has died. Its condition cannot be confirmed without knowing the product’s heat-exposure limits.
Parcel lockers
Collect a probiotic parcel as soon as possible.
A parcel locker may not provide the same conditions as a cool indoor cupboard or refrigerator. Avoid leaving the product there for longer than necessary, especially when the locker is exposed to sunlight.
Cars
Do not store probiotics in a parked car, boot or glove compartment.
Even a shelf-stable product is intended for the storage conditions on its label - not prolonged exposure inside a closed vehicle.
Bring the product inside when you reach your destination.
Kitchens
Choose a dry cupboard away from:
- The stove
- Oven
- Kettle
- Sink
- Dishwasher
- Direct sunlight
- Other sources of heat or steam
A cupboard next to a hot appliance may not remain as cool as the rest of the room.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms are usually a poor place for probiotic supplements.
Steam from baths and showers can raise humidity. Moisture may affect the stability of dried probiotic organisms.
A dry bedroom cupboard or suitable pantry shelf is usually a better choice when the label allows room-temperature storage.
Handbags and work bags
A shelf-stable probiotic may be convenient to carry, provided this fits its label instructions.
Do not leave the bag:
- In a parked car
- Beside a sunny window
- Near a heater
- In a damp place
Keep the probiotic in its original pack rather than moving loose capsules into an unlabelled container.
Holiday travel
Check the label before travelling.
For a shelf-stable product:
- Keep it in its original packaging.
- Protect it from prolonged heat and moisture.
- Do not leave it in a vehicle.
- Pack it in hand luggage when practical.
For a refrigerated product:
- Ask the manufacturer or pharmacist how it should be transported.
- Use an insulated container when advised.
- Do not place the product directly against ice or freeze it unless instructed.
Power interruptions
When a refrigerated probiotic is affected by a power interruption:
- Keep the refrigerator door closed where possible.
- Check the product label.
- Note how long the power was off.
- Contact the manufacturer or pharmacist if the product became warm.
Do not move the product into a freezer unless the manufacturer specifically recommends this.
What should you do when a probiotic becomes warm?
Do not panic, but do not make assumptions.
Follow these steps:
- Read the label. Check whether refrigeration is required.
- Consider the exposure. Note how warm it became and for approximately how long.
- Check the packaging. Look for a broken seal, water damage or moisture inside the pack.
- Contact the manufacturer. Ask whether its stability data cover this type of exposure.

- Do not freeze it. Freezing may not be suitable for the product.
- Do not take extra capsules. You cannot correct uncertain potency by doubling the dose.
A capsule may look and smell normal even when its viable count has changed. Appearance cannot tell you exactly how many live organisms remain. CFU counts require proper testing.
Visible moisture, a broken seal or damaged packaging is a different concern. Do not use a product with damaged tamper protection without first obtaining advice.
What does “CFU at the end of shelf life” mean?
CFU stands for colony-forming units.
It is a laboratory measure used to estimate how many microorganisms can grow under the test conditions.
The number may be stated:
- At the time the product was manufactured, or
- Through the expiry or use-by date
The second figure is usually more useful to the consumer.
CFU at the end of shelf life means the manufacturer expects at least that stated viable count to remain until the product reaches its use-by date, provided it has been stored as directed.
Both the NIH and the World Gastroenterology Organisation recommend paying attention to the count expected through the end of shelf life rather than focusing only on the number present at manufacture. [1-2]
Storage matters because the label dose and the dose available later may differ.
A product may begin with a large bacterial population. Heat, moisture, oxygen and time can reduce that population before the product is taken.
This is part of the wider difference between label dose and delivered dose.
The end-of-shelf-life count still does not tell you how many organisms will survive digestion. It tells you more about what should remain in the product before you swallow it.
Can you tell at home whether the probiotic bacteria are still alive?
No home check can reliably count the live bacteria in a probiotic supplement.
The capsule may look, smell and taste unchanged even if the viable count has fallen.
A reliable assessment depends on:
- Laboratory testing
- Stability data
- Packaging condition
- Storage history
- The expiry date
- Information from the manufacturer
This is why a clear label and a trustworthy manufacturer matter.
A simple probiotic storage checklist
- Follow the exact product label. Do not assume all probiotics need the same storage.
- Keep it dry. Avoid bathrooms, sinks and other humid spaces.
- Avoid prolonged heat. Do not leave it in a parked car or sunny parcel box.
- Protect it from direct light. Keep it in its original container or box.
- Close the pack properly. Replace the lid immediately after use.
- Keep the original packaging. The packaging may help protect the product from moisture, oxygen and light.

Not every probiotic needs refrigeration.
Some products must be kept cold. Others have been designed and tested for room-temperature storage. Neither type is automatically better.
The most important step is to follow the storage directions for the exact product.
Even shelf-stable probiotics should be protected from prolonged heat, moisture, oxygen and direct light. Keep them sealed and in their original packaging.
